This scene starts early the next morning (after Duncans murder) with a hungover porter wasting time ranting away about him being a gatekeeper of hell. Finally he opens the door and Macduff and Lennox enter. Then Macduff goe off to check on King Duncan while Lennox talks to Macbeth about the past night, saying that the night had been unruly, chimneys blown down, strange screams in the air, confused events and that the very Earth had trembled. (This is dramatic fallacy, and is where the environment reflects the happenings of the play, eg, Duncan murdered, earthquake! Person sad, Rain!) Then Macduff returns with terrible news…. The king is murdered! They quickly woke everyone, and Macbeth killed the drunk guards so they couldn’t defend themselves and accuse him or Lady Macbeth. The heirs to the throne, Malcolm and Donbaling then left the castle out of fear of murder, making them seem very suspicious….. Macbeth also is now feeling guilt for his actions when he says “Had I but died an hour before this chance, I had lived a blessed time; for, from this instant, There ‘s nothing serious in mortality: All is but toys: renown and grace is dead; The wine of life is drawn, and the mere lees Is left this vault to brag of.” This is showing his sorrow pf Duncans death and that life is like the dregs of wine, not worth living anymore. He could of course be lying, but this is probably actually true as he didn’t completely want to kill Duncan in the first place.
