symbolism Rockets human nature of ambition | ||
Ambition in humans is brought to the surface in Gattaca through symbolism. Rockets and space are big themes in Gattaca, and the wealthy and genetically superior humans in Gattaca dedicate their efforts and technologies into space exploration and travel. Rockets are constantly being placed in the background of scenes, and are the driving force behind Vincents ambitions. The rockets are symbolizing the unquenchable ambition of mankind, because even the wealthy, upper class section of society, who had no need for ambitious plans to live in comfort and security, still found the need to explore and channel their ambitions into something worthwhile, while at the same time Vincent, who is a genetic misfit and a bit of a reject, still has the same huge ambitions that he is also channeling into space and exploration. This brings ambition to the surface by showing us that all humans have ambition in some form or another, and that ambition is something which makes us human.
Lots of animals don’t have the ambitious drives that us humans have, they are usually contented with the basics of life: food, water, shelter and security. However, us humans seem to always want more, to challenge ourselves and find better ways of doing things, which proves again that our ambitious nature is a defining trait of humans.
