PARAGRAPH

focus: gap filler. Example: Welllll, lets just say you like arts etc……

When we speak we add extra words, sounds or pauses that we wouldn’t use when we write down speech. Often we don’t even know we are doing them. When Nico says “Welllll, lets just say you like arts etc”. The “Welllll…” is not a formal part of speech. It is there to give Nico thinking time and to get Matais attention and prepare him to listen. “um” is used for the same purposes, these are called gap fillers and are used to fill the silence while the speaker is thinking or wanting to get the listeners attention. It can also be used to pace the talking so it doesn’t go to fast, letting both speakers have thinking time. A study was done to investigate what style of speech got the most information across to the listener, and they found that adding gap fillers such as um, like, well, mmm etc, actually helps the listener to understand, I think this is because it is a more natural way to speak. So verbal fillers are actually a useful part of speech that people use subconsciously and to great effect.
