Ozymandias Sonnet

1- personal Response

thoughts/ ideas: reminds me of stonehenge, of a old civilization that has dissapeared

Mood: Mysterious and old, like they knew stuff we didn’t back then

Questions: Why did they build them and think he was the “King of Kings”?

Conclusions: Seems to be sending the message that we are not in control as much as we think we are, maybe they were more clever back then- power doesn’t come from technology, but knowledge?

Link to things I know: The Aztecs and Incas were massive empires but they both got wiped out, showing how fragile civilization and empires can be

2- Check the meaning of words I don’t understand: Ozymandias, But I thinks that’s just a name of the King. Visage- old word for face

3- Notice structure, foreshadowing, patterns, rhyme, repetition, shape, Volta.

Has 8 lines in one stanza and then 6 in the next. The end of lines seems to be halfway through a sentence often

Structure of rhyming endings: a, b, a, b, c, d, e, d f, g, f, h, g, h, Iambic pentameter,

Foreshadowing/ Volta: The first 8 lines seem to be describing the scene with metaphors personification without actually saying what it is, while the last 6 seem to accurately describe it. The Volta shows that although he thought he was so powerful time has destroyed his empire.

4- Explore language effects

Point of View: First person describing a past conversation, could be second person?

Narrative voice: someone describing something
